Terrell Suggs Says 'Hell Yeah' Ravens Players Would Welcome Colin Kaepernick
Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs said players in Baltimore's locker room would welcome free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick as long as "he's going to help us win."
Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com passed along comments the longtime Ravens defensive stalwart made Sunday about Baltimore's rumored interest in Kaepernick and whether he'd be accepted by the team.
"Hell yeah, if he's going to help us win," Suggs said. "We have no issues. Not in the locker room. Hell yeah, we want him."
Baltimore defensive back Lardarius Webb responded in a similar manner, saying Kaepernick could provide competition at the NFL's most important position, per Hensley.
"I would love to have him to come challenge some other quarterbacks," Webb said. "We all know Joe [Flacco] is our guy. We love [Ryan] Mallett. But yeah, we all would like competition around here to make everyone better."
Meanwhile, Ryan Mink of the Ravens' official website reported Sunday the team is doing "extensive research" into the former San Francisco 49ers starting QB. Mink also provided remarks team owner Steve Bisciotti made about the situation during a fan forum.
"Talk to your neighbors and your friends and your co-workers, because I think you'll get the same sense that I got, which is every time I hear something negative, I hear something positive and sometimes it shocks me who it's coming from," he said. "I hope we do what is best for the team and balance that with what's best for the fans. Your opinions matter to us, and we couldn't get a consensus on it in [this room] either."
Kaepernick made nationwide headlines last year for his decision to kneel during the national anthem. His form of protest, which he explained to Steve Wyche of NFL.com last August, made him one of the most polarizing figures in sports.
"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," he said. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."
In turn, he's struggled to generate interest as a free agent after opting out of his contract with the Niners in March. His extended stay on the market comes despite a career 88.9 passer rating, which ranks 11th among active quarterbacks, and 13 rushing touchdowns in six seasons.
He'd likely compete with Mallett, Dustin Vaughan and Josh Woodrum for the backup job behind Flacco, who's been dealing with a back injury, if signed by the Ravens.

Robert Griffin III May Work Out for Ravens Amid Joe Flacco Injury Concerns
The Baltimore Ravens are keeping their options open at the quarterback position, which includes a possible workout for Robert Griffin III.
According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, owner Steve Bisciotti said the team is monitoring starter Joe Flacco's injury as well as the play of backup Ryan Mallett.
Flacco is currently out with a back injury, which could cause him to miss three to six weeks, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
With the veteran starter on the sidelines, the Ravens lack depth at the position with only Mallett, Dustin Vaughan and the recently signed David Olson out of the Champions Indoor Football League on the roster.
Per Jamison Hensley of ESPN, Mallett has especially struggled during recent workouts, throwing at least five interceptions in a practice.
Head coach John Harbaugh has reportedly considered adding Colin Kaepernick, per Conor Orr of NFL.com, but there hasn't been any progress on a deal.

Griffin only made five starts last season after sitting on the bench for the entire 2015 season. The 27-year-old showed some flashes of his old athleticism with the Cleveland Browns in 2016 with 38 rushing yards per game, but he had just two passing touchdowns and three interceptions for a 72.5 quarterback rating.

Colin Kaepernick Had Direct Talks with Ravens, Team 'Weighing Decision'
Baltimore Ravens president Richard W. Cass said the team spoke with Colin Kaepernick and is "weighing" whether to sign the free-agent quarterback, the Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec reported Sunday.
Kaepernick remains unsigned after he voided his contract with the San Francisco 49ers. He threw for 2,241 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions in 12 games with the team in 2016.

Ravens Sign Ex-Giants TE Larry Donnell to Contract
Former New York Giants tight end Larry Donnell will get a chance at a fresh start after signing with the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
Donnell spent five years with the Giants after joining the team as an undrafted free agent in 2012. His best season came in 2014 when he broke out for 63 catches, 623 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Only Odell Beckham Jr. had more touchdowns on the team.
Unfortunately, his 2015 season was derailed by a neck injury that threatened the rest of his career.
While he returned to the field in 2016, he struggled while only managing 15 catches for 92 yards and one touchdown in 14 games. Will Tye and rookie Jerell Adams moved past him on the Giants depth chart, making him expendable in the offseason.
Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported in February the team's plans not to re-sign the player.
Despite the disappointing performance from this past season, though, Donnell represents a big target at 6'5" who can make plays both in the middle of the field and near the end zone. He once scored three touchdowns in a Thursday Night Football battle against the Washington Redskins.
At the very least, he will provide the Ravens with an experienced player to add some depth on offense and special teams. However, he can also still put up quality numbers if given an opportunity.

Colin Kaepernick Reportedly Would 'Love' to Play for Ravens
If the Baltimore Ravens wanted to make Colin Kaepernick an offer, the free-agent quarterback would reportedly welcome the opportunity to play for the team.

Joe Flacco Says Ravens Would Be Good Team for Colin Kaepernick
Baltimore Ravens starting quarterback Joe Flacco believes fellow QB Colin Kaepernick deserves another chance in the NFL and said he'd welcome him to the organization.
On Friday, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com passed along comments from Flacco, who light-heartedly talked about Kaepernick not getting another chance to start if he joined the Ravens, though.
"I would like to see Colin get back in [the NFL], and at some point, maybe get another shot [to be a starter]," he said. "I wouldn't like that to be here. I do not want him to get another shot [to be a starter] here, but yes, he can come here and have some fun. I think it would be a good spot for him."
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported earlier in the week Flacco was in jeopardy of missing three-to-six weeks with a back injury, which raised concerns he might not be ready for the start of the regular season in early September.
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports later noted an MRI on the ailment came back "clean" and the Ravens' starter told reporters Friday it was merely "a little stiffness."
While Baltimore was awaiting further information about the extent of Flacco's back problem, head coach John Harbaugh confirmed he's been in contact with Kaepernick on a casual basis during the offseason, per Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz of USA Today.
"He and I have been talking throughout the summer a number of times," he said. "We had some great conversations on the phone and it's really been a pleasure to talk to him and get to know him. I like history and politics too, and we've had some debates, and it's been fun. And he's a great guy."
Harbaugh added: "He's a guy right now that's being talked about. We'll see what happens with that. Only speculation right now. He's a really good football player and like I said, I do believe he'll be playing in the National Football League this year."
Kaepernick remains the league's most high-profile free agent after opting out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers in March. He made national headlines last season for his decision to kneel during the national anthem, making him one of the most polarizing figures in sports.
In March, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reported the quarterback would stand for the national anthem if he was signed for the 2017 season.
It's unclear if the Ravens are still considering Kaepernick now that it sounds like Flacco isn't dealing with a serious injury, barring a setback. He would likely battle Ryan Mallett for backup duties during training camp and the preseason if added to the roster.
Ultimately, whether it's Baltimore or another organization, a team will likely sign him once injury issues begin to arise in the coming weeks.

Ravens Sign QB David Olson After Reported Colin Kaepernick Interest
The Baltimore Ravens reportedly are taking a chance on quarterback David Olson, signing him to a contract Thursday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Olson last played for the Kansas City Phantoms in the Champions Indoor Football League.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh had previously discussed possible interest in free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

"He's a great guy. He's a guy right now that's being talked about," Harbaugh said of Kaepernick, per Conor Orr of NFL.com. "We'll just see what happens with that. Only speculation right now. He's a really good football player and like I said, I do believe he'll be playing in the National Football League this year."
Amy Trask of CBS Sports also provided her impression of owner Steve Bisciotti's thoughts on the issue:

The Olson signing comes after Rapoport reported Wednesday that Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco could miss up to three-to-six weeks with a disc issue in his back.
Ryan Mallett and Dustin Vaughn are the only other quarterbacks on the roster and combined for just six pass attempts last season.
Meanwhile, Olson has even less high-level experience after throwing just three passes in his entire college career. He finished 1-of-3 for minus-1 yards at Clemson after transferring from Stanford.
Presumably, former Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh tipped off his brother, John, about his former player.
Still, Kaepernick remains unsigned despite posting a 90.7 quarterback rating in 12 games last season with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions.

John Harbaugh Says Ravens Are Interested in Signing Colin Kaepernick
Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said on Thursday that he has been talking to free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick throughout the summer and that the team is considering signing him, according to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun.
Zrebiec added, "Harbaugh said signing Kaepernick depends on what Kaepernick wants to do. Ravens are interested. They're planning on bringing in another quarterback."
Harbaugh further elaborated on his relationship with Kaepernick, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com:
Harbaugh's comments come just a day after Rapoport reported that starter Joe Flacco was "preparing" to miss three to six weeks with a disc injury in his back, and at the least would miss a week or two of action. That leaves the Ravens with just Ryan Mallett and Dustin Vaughan on the depth chart.
Kaepernick would arguably represent an upgrade over both players in the backup role to Flacco.
As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk noted, Kaepernick's ties with the Ravens also run deeper than some conversations with Harbaugh. He was coached by Ravens senior offensive assistant Greg Roman in San Francisco, when Roman was the offensive coordinator under head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Kaepernick has controversially remained unsigned this season, with many claiming his political stance of kneeling during the national anthem last season to protest police brutality and the unequal treatment of minorities in the United States has led to him being blacklisted by many NFL teams.

Ravens OL John Urschel Retires After CTE Study, Continues Pursuit of MIT Ph.D.
Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman John Urschel surprisingly retired from the NFL on Thursday at the age of 26.
According to CNN's Jill Martin, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh was informed of the decision on Thursday and released the following statement on Urschel: "We respect John and respect his decision. We appreciate his efforts over the past three years and wish him all the best in his future endeavors."
A source told ESPN's Jamison Hensley that the results of a recent chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) study played a role in Urschel's retirement.
Urschel is pursuing his doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The aforementioned study was published Tuesday in the medical journal JAMA (h/t CNN.com's Daniella Emanuel). Doctors discovered CTE in 110 of 111 brains from deceased former NFL players.
Urschel is a mathematician, and he said the head trauma after a 2015 concussion impacted his ability to think, according to Hensley: "I think it hurt my ability to think well mathematically. It took me about three weeks before I was football-ready. It took me a little bit longer before my high-level visualizations ability came back."
The Ravens selected Urschel in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL draft out of Penn State. The team utilized him primarily as a backup guard, although he also made appearances at tackle and center. He made 13 starts during his three-year career.
Prior to his retirement, Urschel was in the mix for Baltimore's starting job at center. Ryan Jensen and Matt Skura will now compete for the spot.

Joe Flacco Reportedly to Miss 3-6 Weeks with Back Injury
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco will reportedly miss the start of training camp because of a disc issue in his back.
On Wednesday, Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported he is out "at least a week or two" and is preparing to miss as many as three to six weeks.
Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun first reported the injury but said that back soreness may limit his repetitions or cause him to miss a few practices.
Flacco nursed a minor shoulder injury in 2016, but the ailment didn't force him to miss any games a season after he tore his ACL.
Other than in 2015, the 32-year-old has played all 16 games in his eight other seasons in the NFL.
So long as Flacco is sidelined, backup Ryan Mallett should see the bulk of the first-team snaps in practice.
Mallett's last meaningful action came in 2015, when he completed 59.8 percent of his passes for 566 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in two starts for the Ravens. Dustin Vaughan is the only other quarterback on the roster.

Ravens Reportedly to Sign Bobby Rainey to Contract After Kenneth Dixon's Surgery
The Baltimore Ravens are reportedly signing veteran running back Bobby Rainey to replace Kenneth Dixon, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Dixon underwent season-ending knee surgery Tuesday, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reported that the Ravens had interest in adding Rainey even before Dixon's injury.
Rainey, 29, rushed for 63 yards in 15 games for the New York Giants last season. He added 20 receptions for 153 yards. Rainey had a previous stint with the Ravens in 2012-13 (he never saw the field in a regular-season game) and has also spent time with the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in his career.
As for Dixon, the running back was facing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs. But after tearing his meniscus, Dixon could be out for the season, according to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun:
"Team officials hoped he just needed the meniscus trimmed, which would have sidelined him in the six-to-eight-week range. However, Dixon wound up needing a full meniscus repair, according to a source. The recovery from that procedure ... usually requires around four or five months, putting Dixon’s season in jeopardy.
"It’s his third knee injury since the Ravens drafted him in the fifth round last year."
Dixon's injury leaves Terrance West and Danny Woodhead as the team's starters at running back. West fills the role of the early-down, between-the-tackles runner, and Woodhead serves as the third-down scatback.
The team also has Buck Allen and Taquan Mizzell on the depth chart, while Lorenzo Taliaferro—who has been converted to a fullback—could see carries as well.

Kenneth Dixon Reportedly Will Undergo Surgery to Repair Knee Injury
Baltimore Ravens running back Kenneth Dixon reportedly will undergo surgery after he tore his meniscus, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport on Tuesday.
Expectations were somewhat high for Dixon in his rookie season. But a torn MCL in the 2016 preseason delayed his regular-season debut, and he failed to make a significant impact in the Baltimore backfield when he did feature. Dixon ran for 382 yards and two touchdowns in 12 appearances.
The 23-year-old had another setback ahead of the 2017 campaign when he received a four-game suspension for a violation of the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy.
Between Lorenzo Taliaferro, Javorius Allen and Terrance West, the Ravens shouldn't have trouble filling the void Dixon leaves with regard to the running game. Baltimore also signed Danny Woodhead, who missed all but two games in 2016 but remains one of the NFL's better pass-catching running backs.

If you enjoy the Fourth festivities in Dundalk, thank a volunteer
As I write this, it is Monday - the day after the 2017 Dundalk Heritage Fair closed for another year - and, across the community, people are simultaneous recovering from that while preparing for the Independence Day festivities ahead. But, regardless of when you read this, none of these events would have been possible without the hard work of many, many volunteers who dedicate a large chunk of time to planning, setting up, working and tearing down the fair, parade and fireworks each year.

KIX rocks Dundalk Heritage Fair opening night
At 8 p.m. on Friday night, five men with flowing locks, donning skin-tight pants and smirks, stepped onto the Shipway Stage at the Heritage Fair to the sound of deafening cheers. These men were Jimmy Chalfant, Ronnie Younkins, Brian Forsythe, Mark Schenker and Steve Whiteman, better known as KIX, an American hard rock band that made it's debut in Hagerstown in the 1980s.
