Ravens LB Elvis Dumervil Could Not Have Had Worse Trip to 2016 Pro Bowl

A trip to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl should be rewarding for NFL players because it means that they are being honored for being the best of the best that season.

For Baltimore Ravens linebacker Elvis Dumervil, his trip to Hawaii could not have gone much worse.

Dumervil had initially been named as a Pro Bowl alternate, which means that he would only go if other players at his position either pulled out because of injury or had to miss the game because their respective team made the Super Bowl.

It wasn't until after the conference championship games had been played last Sunday that the veteran found out he had been selected to his fifth Pro Bowl.

As Ryan Mink of BaltimoreRavens.com found out, that's when things started getting crazy for the Ravens star.

Even though he had already gone into "offseason mode," Dumervil was more than happy to alter his plans to take part in the Pro Bowl. But getting to Hawaii would not prove to be easy.

Dumervil first had to take a train from New York to Baltimore to get some things for his trip to Hawaii. Last weekend was also when Winter Storm Jonas buried the Northeast in snow, meaning flying east to west was not easy. However, the 32-year-old was able to fly from Baltimore to Minneapolis, Minneapolis, to Los Angeles and then from Los Angeles to Hawaii.

The good news was Dumervil escaped a historic snowstorm for a beach. The bad news was his bag didn't make it to Hawaii with him.

Here's how Dumervil explained his luggage issue, per Mink:

The bags were supposed to arrive in Hawaii by noon the next day. They didn’t, and when Dumervil called, he got a, 'Sir, we have a problem.'

'Your bag has been checked to Japan,' the Delta employee said.

'I’ve never been to Japan, but the [darn] bag has,' Dumervil said, now with a laugh as he told the story. 'I’ve been two days without my bags.'

Unfortunately, baggage does get lost from time to time. This time, it just happened to really affect the traveler.

Dumervil had clothes and vitamins in the bag that somehow made its way to Japan. During the first Pro Bowl practice this week, Mink reported that Dumervil frequently had to wipe his nose, an issue that the linebacker said came about because he didn't have his vitamins.

Here is a quick recap: Dumervil had to take three planes to go from Baltimore to Hawaii, had his luggage separated from him along the way and wound up getting sick. All of those issues occurred on a trip that was supposed to be a reward for having a strong season.

Fortunately for Dumervil, he made it to the Pro Bowl safely, and his bag showed up by Thursday afternoon. Now, he's had a few days to enjoy the experience as much as possible.

Let's just hope that his trip home goes much smoother.

Teachers, parents call for new Lansdowne High, not renovation

Across from Luke Simon's office in Lansdowne High School is a bathroom with poor ventilation, which he says causes foul odors to leak into the hallway. Baltimore City school choice fair draws thousands

Less than two months after a 17-year-old student was fatally stabbed inside West Baltimore's Renaissance Academy late last year, school officials had the task of selling the school to prospective students on Saturday. They brought two of their most earnest students, senior Marvin Whitney and sophomore Jeremiah Caldwell, to talk to parents and teens about the school, which has a mentoring program called Seeds of Promise for some of its students, who are primarily male and at-risk.

Terrell Suggs: Latest News, Rumors, Speculation Surrounding Ravens LB's Future

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs was lost for the 2015 season when he tore his Achilles in Week 1, but it appears as if his team expects him back in 2016.

Continue for updates.

Ravens Front Office Discusses Suggs' Future

Thursday, Jan. 7

General manager Ozzie Newsome suggested Suggs will not be retiring this offseason, per Garrett Downing of the Ravens' official website: "In my last conversation with him, his answer to me was ‘I don’t want to leave the game the way I left it out in Denver.’ I think he’s using that as motivation.”

Suggs has not spoken to reporters since the setback and didn’t show up on the sidelines of a game until Week 16 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Newsome addressed the linebacker’s absence, per Downing: “I think he had his reasons why for not being here, both personal and other reasons. He chose not to be in the building so that the focal point is on the guys, as he would say—on the field, and not necessarily on him as a guy that’s rehabbing.”

Attention certainly would have been on Suggs since he is synonymous with the franchise. He has been with Baltimore since it drafted him in the first round in 2003 and helped the team win a Super Bowl ring in 2012. He is a six-time Pro Bowler, was the 2003 Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year and was the 2011 Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year.

While it is impossible to deny his importance in recent Ravens history, Suggs will turn 34 years old during the 2016 season. Still, the Ravens felt his absence during a 5-11 campaign in 2015, especially since the defense finished 24th in the league in points allowed per game.

Owner Steve Bisciotti discussed the effects of Suggs’ injury, per Downing:

The one thing that I think I underestimated was when Suggs went down in Week 1. Now, at the end of the year, I think I didn’t come close to understanding the impact.

[...]

If you had said, ‘What one guy can’t you afford to lose on defense?’ I think most of you would have said, ‘Suggs.’ I don’t know that, but if you didn’t, I think you can look back and say we could have lost anybody on that defense in Week 1 other than Suggs, and it wouldn’t have had the kind of trickle-down effect that it had on our whole defense. I just think you have to appreciate that.

Suggs is clearly important to Baltimore’s defensive efforts, and these comments suggest the Ravens would be pleased to welcome him back, even though Michael David Smith of NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk said the linebacker “is scheduled to count $7.45 million against the Ravens’ salary cap in 2016, a hefty price for a 33-year-old coming off a serious injury.”

Hefty price or not, it will be worth paying if the Ravens improve from a dismal effort in 2015.

Steve Smith Injury: Updates on Ravens WR's Recovery from Achilles Surgery

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. saw his 2015 season cut short after he tore his Achilles tendon, but he has his eyes on a comeback in 2016.

Continue for updates.

Smith May Be Ready for Training Camp

Thursday, Jan. 7

Smith had his Achilles surgery in early November, and Ravens coach John Harbaugh said "he is hopeful" the pass-catcher "will be ready for training camp," per Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun

He played seven games in 2015 before he tore his Achilles against the San Diego Chargers on Nov. 1 and finished with 670 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He appeared well on his way to another 1,000-yard campaign as Joe Flacco’s top option in the aerial attack before the setback and was actually eighth in the league at the time of the injury.

Smith topped 1,000 receiving yards eight different times in his career, including three of the previous four seasons coming into the 2015 campaign.

While he said he planned on retiring following the 2015 season before the injury, he is fully committed to a comeback at this point.

Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com noted the receiver’s walking boot was removed Monday and shared some comments from Smith regarding his age (he will be 37 in May): “Before I got hurt, you all didn’t think I would be able to put up the numbers that I was at 36. So, will I be able to put up numbers at 37? To be honest, you guys don’t know what the hell you’re talking about, so it doesn’t matter.”

Only Jerry Rice, who is widely considered the best wide receiver in NFL history, reached the 1,000-yard plateau after turning 37 years old, and he did so twice (2001 at age 39 and 2002 at age 40). Smith seemed ready to join some elite company in 2016, per Hensley:

I think what you need to do is let me play and quit commenting about my play, because every time you all tell me something I can’t do, then you have a reason [for] why I’m doing it. I was 36 years old and close to the Top 5. Just let me play. Quit asking me what I’m going to put up. I’m going to put up the numbers I’m going to put up, and I’ll contribute the way I contribute at 37.

Smith is motivated and is well on the path to recovery heading into the offseason. That may be exactly the boost the Ravens need following a disappointing and injury-riddled 5-11 season.

Steve Smith Comments on Recovery from Achilles Surgery, Decision to Play in '16

Steve Smith Sr. entered 2015 on a retirement run, but after suffering a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 8 at the top of his game, the soon-to-be 37-year-old announced last Wednesday he’ll return next season.

And in typical form as one of the game’s most vocally passionate, he had a message to skeptics doubting he can regain form following such a gruesome injury, per Ryan Mink of the Baltimore Ravens' official website:

When I started to put up good numbers, you guys told me, ‘Well, he’ll tail off.’ What you need to do is just let me play and quit commenting about my play, because every time you all tell me something I can’t do, then you have a reason for why I’m doing it. … Just let me play. Quit asking me what I’m going to put up. I’m going to put up the numbers I put up and contribute the way I contribute at age 37.

Smith told Mink he started thinking of a possible return in 2016 before the team's Week 2 game against the Oakland Raiders. The league's oldest receiver also said he won't rush his rehab to get back:

We talked about it off and on from [Week 2]. Obviously, when I got hurt, [we] sat down and decided, ‘What do you want to do?’ After I sobered up from the operation and dealing with all that, we talked about it and had a feel of what I wanted to do.

I won’t be ahead of schedule. If anything, to be safe, I’ll be behind schedule. With an injury like this, you don’t want to be ahead of schedule. That takes away a lot of stuff.

At the time of his injury, Smith ranked among the top 10 in catches (46) and receiving yards (670), prompting speculation after his rocket-fire start that he’d come back in 2016 even before he suffered his injury.

But after his devastating blow, Smith finally made the announcement last Wednesday he’d return via Twitter:

The long-awaited announcement didn’t come as a surprise to his teammates.

"He's not the type of guy to go out like that,” offensive tackle Kelechi Osemele said, courtesy Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com. "Obviously, we can't wait to have him back. I know he's going to come back in the best shape of his life and he's going to dominate because that's the type of person he is. … I knew as soon as he got injured he was going to be back. That's just Steve. He didn't come here to go out like that."

Smith is entering the final year of a three-year, $10.5 million contract, and he is slated to earn $3 million in 2016, per Spotrac.

The Ravens finished an underachieving 5-11 after dealing with a slew of injuries aside from Smith’s.

They have the talent and leadership to succeed—as they’ve shown throughout head coach John Harbaugh’s eight-year tenure—meaning they should rebound in 2016 once everyone, particularly Smith, is back at full strength.

Local Beer: The Key Brewing Company in Dundalk, MD

From: http://www.beerfellows.com/2015/12/like-no-way-dude-california-common-by.html

Like, No Way, Dude! - California Common by Key Brewing

Like, you know, beer is like radically different, from like coast to coast. You know, because, ingredients were, like you know, never the same. And now the ingredients, dude, are coming back and they like have their California-cation put on them. Like their hops and their malt, its like totally integrated. So cool, they like have gone like full circle.

California Common - Key Brewing
Never, dude, was that truer than California Common by Key Brewing Company. The Key Brewing Company (Dundalk, MD) is a small brewery moving on up to the competition of big time breweries. The California Common, one of four beers that Key Brewing has responsibility for, is the first that this beer blogger has gotten his lips on and I can tell you that this beer and this brewery are set to go far.

A California Common (or Cali Common) is kind of an average beer. There have been a few Cali Commons and while they have all advanced a wheat taste, that is where they left it off.  The difference for Key Brewing's Cali Common is that they have picked up that taste and run with it.  The flavor is richer and tastier than in normal beer and just that flavoring make the Cali Common a fun beer and one worth a second round. The color is also darker, slightly and that makes it appear to be a beer ready for more than a first look.

For Untappd, I rated it this way: Pretty good California Common. Nice flavor, low hop count and reduced malt. It sounds reduced, but it is not. Just smooth goodness, Linda.

I rated it a 4.25 on Untappd.

If you are going to be trying new beers after that holidays, this California Common by Key Brewers should be on that list. It may be a nice surprise.

Baltimore Sun: County issues warning after rabid raccoon is found in Dundalk

Health officials are alerting residents that a rabid raccoon was found in Dundalk that might have been in contact with other animals.

The raccoon was found Monday on Rosebank Avenue in the North Point neighborhood near Back River and tested positive for rabies, according to officials with the Baltimore County Department of Health.

There aren't any known interactions between the raccoon and people, but it's likely the raccoon was in contact with other animals in the neighborhood, officials said.
Traps will be set on the property where the raccoon was found to catch animals that may have been exposed. Pets that are microchipped or tagged will be returned to their owners if trapped — if they are vaccinated. Other animals will be euthanized and tested for rabies, said Monique Lyle, a county health spokeswoman.

Anyone who thinks they may have come in contact with the raccoon should contact their doctor. They also should notify the Baltimore County Department of Health by calling 410-887-6011 during business hours or 410-832-7182 after hours.
