Joe Flacco Injury: Updates on Ravens QB's Recovery from Knee Surgery
Joe Flacco's recovery from a torn ACL appears to be going well, as the Baltimore Ravens expect their quarterback to return this summer.
Continue for updates.
Flacco Expected Back for Training Camp
Saturday, April 30
Per Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said during an appearance on the NFL Network that Flacco is "ahead of schedule and will be ready for training camp."
Last November, Harbaugh announced that Flacco would miss the rest of the season after tearing the ACL and MCL in his left knee during a game against the St. Louis Rams.
At the time, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora said the best-case scenario for Flacco with an injury like that would be a return close to the start of next season before adding it could carry into 2016.
NFL teams open training camp in mid-July, no earlier than 15 days before their first preseason game. That timetable gives Flacco eight months of recovery time if he takes part in activities right away.
The Ravens' first preseason game is on August 11 against the Carolina Panthers, and they open the regular season on September 11 against the Buffalo Bills.
Before the knee injury, Flacco was one of the NFL's most durable quarterbacks. He made 122 consecutive starts for the Ravens from 2008 until his knee injury, leading the franchise to a Super Bowl title with a victory over the San Francisco 49ers in 2013.

Jimmy Smith Injury: Updates on Ravens CB's Recovery from Foot Surgery
Baltimore Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith is currently on the shelf after undergoing a foot procedure, but he is reportedly making strides toward returning to action.
Continue for updates.
Report: Smith Expected to Recover in 4-to-6 Weeks
Friday, April 29
According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, the 27-year-old defensive back is set to get screws removed from his foot in the coming week. ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley later confirmed the report Friday.
Zrebiec revealed the Ravens are hopeful Smith will be out for only four to six weeks, and he explained what that could mean for Baltimore's draft strategy:
Per Hensley, Smith is expected to be ready for training camp in July and could potentially make it back in time for June's minicamp.
Smith has emerged as the Ravens' most consistent and reliable cornerback over the past three seasons after being selected in the first round of the 2011 NFL draft out of Colorado.
He started all 16 games in 2015, registering 54 tackles, a career-high three interceptions and his first NFL touchdown.
Injuries have plagued Smith during his career, however, as he has appeared in all 16 games just twice in five seasons. That included eight missed contests in 2014 due to a foot ailment, which he is dealing with once again.
When Smith is healthy, he is an unquestioned starter across from Lardarius Webb. While that starting combo is a solid one, the Ravens lack quality depth with inconsistent options like Kyle Arrington, Will Davis and Shareece Wright backing them up.
Smith's availability will be vital to Baltimore's pass defense in 2016, as it allowed 30 touchdowns through the air and had a league-worst six interceptions even with Smith in the lineup last season.
Getting the procedure done now should ensure Smith is good to go for 2016, and that is a great sign for a Ravens team that is looking to bounce back from a 2015 campaign that saw them lose many of their top players on both sides of the ball due to injury.

A county judge recently ruled that the developers of the county's North Point Government Center complex in Dundalk do not need approval from the state Board of Pubic Works to go forward with plans to turn 16 acres of the county-owned site into a mix of offices and shops. But the legal wrangle is not necessarily over, as the state Office of the Attorney General could appeal the ruling to the Court of Special Appeals in Annapolis.

Eugene Monroe Discusses Painkiller Use, NFL's Drug Policy
Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Eugene Monroe aired his frustration with the NFL's drug policy, including the league's relationship to opioid substances, in a discussion on Twitter.
Monroe opened his discussion with this take on opioids:
Backing up for just a moment, the NFL has a long history with opioids. John Barr of ESPN's Outside the Lines published a story in which researchers interviewed 644 former NFL players who retired between 1979 and 2006.
According to Barr's report, citing a study from the Drug and Alcohol Dependence scientific journal, NFL players "misuse opioid pain medications at a rate more than four times that of the general population, and new evidence suggests that is occurring because players misused the painkillers during their NFL careers."
Among the key findings listed in the study, 52 percent of retired players who participated admitted using pain medication while playing, and 71 percent of that group said " they misused the drugs then, and 15 percent of the misusers acknowledged misusing the medication within the past 30 days."
Another key finding was 63 percent of retired players said they received the drugs from a "non-medical source: a teammate, coach, trainer, family member, dealer or the Internet."
Monroe continued to describe the situation he deals with involving opioids:
One reason for Monroe's sudden realization about the dangers of opioids had to do with the death this week of musician Prince:
While an official cause of death for Prince has not been made available, TMZ did report the legendary singer was treated for a drug overdose six days before he died on April 21.
TMZ said in a separate report that Prince was taking percocet, which contains the opioid known as oxycodone, to treat hip pain.
Monroe's concerns don't seem to be without merit, based on Barr's report. The NFL is always trying to find ways to make the game safer on the field, but as far as protecting the long-term health of athletes in between games and after their careers end, it seems there is work to be done.

Trent Richardson to Ravens: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction
Running back Trent Richardson is getting another chance to prove his worth at the NFL level.
The Baltimore Ravens announced that they added the former Alabama superstar on Monday with the hopes he will once again tap into the talent that made him such a promising prospect in his younger days.
This doesn’t come as much surprise considering Matt Zenitz of AL.com reported on Feb. 25 that Richardson was “expected to sign” with the Ravens.
At least the running back is familiar with the AFC North since the Cleveland Browns selected him with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2012 draft. It wasn’t hard to see why at the time after he played for two national championship teams at Alabama and finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting (behind Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck).
Richardson had high-profile SEC games under his belt and was versatile enough in college to run between the tackles or around the outside and also get involved in the passing game.
Cleveland received an impressive 950 rushing yards, 367 receiving yards and 12 total touchdowns during that rookie campaign, although his average of 3.6 yards per carry served as a warning sign.
Richardson never replicated that first-season production on the Browns or as a member of the Indianapolis Colts, who traded a first-round pick for the Alabama product. He hasn't appeared in a regular-season contest since 2014 and posted an abysmal average of 3.3 yards per carry over 46 career games from 2012-14.
NFL Network highlighted just how bad it got statistically for Richardson:
SportsCenter's Twitter account shared commentator Ryan Clark’s harsh view on the running back:
The Raiders brought Richardson aboard before the 2015 campaign but ultimately released him following a lackluster showing in the preseason (10 carries for 37 yards).
Despite the lack of production, Richardson seemed to believe in himself this past offseason when he appeared on Fox Sports' Outkick The Show (via Ross Jones of FoxSports.com): "When I get back in this league, they're going to hate me. They're going to love me, but they're going to hate me because I'm going to come back. ... And I can't wait until I get back."
That type of confidence is likely a welcome sign for the Ravens, even though Richardson will have to work to see the field and move up the depth chart.
When the signing appeared likely in late February, Darin Gantt of ProFootballTalk called this pairing a “no-risk look at a guy who once was OK,” while Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com pointed to a deep group of running backs in Baltimore that included Justin Forsett, Lorenzo Taliaferro and Terrance West.
Still, the Ravens were an abysmal 26th in the league in rushing yards in 2015 and could use reinforcements at the running back position:
Even if the Ravens need to improve their rushing totals, the fact that another team signed Richardson is a testament to the power of the draft. The thinking likely goes that he was once the No. 3 overall pick, so he must logically have some untapped upside in his game.
Perhaps Baltimore can be the one to “fix” him as he finally fulfills the potential so many saw years ago.
It doesn’t hurt that he is still only 25 years old and should theoretically have a handful of prime-production years ahead.
It may seem like wishful thinking, but it was a chance the Ravens were willing to take.

Even with extension of tax deadline, some still scramble at the last minute
On a bright and sunny April Sunday, when everyone was out enjoying the weather or browsing the farmers' market, Ed Hamilton was in the main post office on Fayette Street, dropping his tax return off in the mail. With one day to go before this year's extended deadline, Hamilton, 59, of Dundalk, was one of millions of Americans who wait until the last minute to file their taxes.

Great to see kids can still play at Government Center
I've always wanted Dundalk to be known for what it does for its problems rather than just for its problems. During a time of much bipartisan wrangling over just about everything, it's truly fantastic to see the children of Dundalk come out on top, if only for a second.

The Baltimore County Council passed new zoning regulations that, residents hoped, would improve truck traffic in the Dundalk and Edgemere areas. Among the new regulations were rules on the required distance of truck terminals from residential and commercial zones and restrictions on the movement of trucks through residential communities.

Dennis Pitta, Ravens Agree to New Contract: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction
The Baltimore Ravens and tight end Dennis Pitta agreed to restructure his contract on Wednesday, according to Ryan Mink of the team's official site.
“Dennis wants to continue his playing career, and we want to give him that opportunity,” general manager Ozzie Newsome said, per Mink. “We have reworked his contract, and we’re excited to help him with his comeback. Everyone here wants Dennis to succeed.”
Pitta, 30, appeared to be a burgeoning star at tight end following the 2012 season, when he caught 61 passes for 669 yards and seven touchdowns—all career highs. But injury issues have hampered his career since.
He missed the entire 2015 season due to a fractured and dislocated hip. He appeared in just seven games for the Ravens between the 2013-14 season, registering 36 receptions for 294 yards and a score in that time.
"I am thankful for this opportunity to continue my career,” Pitta noted, per Mink. “I’m excited to get back to work with my teammates and for this organization. Physically, I feel great and am ready to begin building toward a successful 2016 season."
While terms of the restructure weren't released by the team, Pitta was scheduled to make $5 million in base salary for the season, a high price for a player who has appeared in seven games total over the past three seasons.
Pitta almost assuredly would have been cut without a contract restructure, though he still isn't guaranteed to make the team, with Benjamin Watson, Crockett Gillmore, Maxx Williams and Nick Boyle on the roster at the position.
And despite his efforts to return, Pitta may simply never play again. Ed Werder and Jamison Hensley of ESPN reported in Nov. 2015 that doctors advised him that it wasn't safe for him to continue playing football after having two major hip surgeries. It's unclear why, or if, doctors would take a different stance on his health now.
Ultimately, it will be Pitta's decision whether he attempts a comeback or ultimately calls it quits. But at least one hurdle in the path to a potential return, his contract, was cleared on Wednesday.

Dennis Pitta Injury: Updates on Ravens TE's Hip and Recovery
After missing the entire 2015 campaign due to a hip injury, Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta will reportedly attempt to return to action in 2016.
Continue for updates.
Latest on Pitta's Decision to Resume Playing Career
Tuesday, April 12
According to Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports 1, the 30-year-old veteran made the decision to continue playing after meeting with his doctors.
While Pitta is hoping to play next season, he must first be cleared to do so by the Ravens, per Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun:
The former BYU standout fractured his hip in 2013 before dislocating it in 2014. He has played in just seven games since the start of the 2013 campaign, and his spot on Baltimore's roster is nowhere near certain even if he does prove to be healthy.
According to Luke Jones of WNST.net, Pitta is set to earn a significant salary assuming his comeback attempt is successful:
Baltimore selected tight end Maxx Williams in the second round of last year's draft and signed Ben Watson in free agency this offseason. Also, Crockett Gillmore was the team's leading pass-catcher at tight end last season, and he remains on the roster.
Pitta appeared well on his way to becoming a Pro Bowl-caliber tight end in 2012 when he set career highs with 61 receptions for 669 yards and seven touchdowns as one of quarterback Joe Flacco's favorite targets.
The 2010 fourth-round pick is undoubtedly an asset when healthy, but Baltimore's depth at tight end could force him to continue his NFL career elsewhere.
A return to action is far from guaranteed, though, and it it is entirely possible that Pitta's body can no longer stand up to the rigors of NFL football after suffering two significant, career-threatening injuries in recent years.
