Drink up: Bottomless brunch options around Baltimore
At the start of each weekend, plenty of text message chains all around Baltimore begin with the same question: "Brunch?" Here, the leisurely paced gathering is more than a meal - it's a time to catch up with friends and family, celebrate, complain about the workweek and meet new people. For many, it's also an opportunity to catch an early buzz on a budget - thanks to the popular bottomless-brunch model, in which patrons pay a flat rate and get an unlimited amount of drinks within a certain time frame.

Baltimore County Council restricts development at Fort Howard
The Baltimore County Council drastically reduced the number of homes that could be built at the shuttered Fort Howard VA hospital, one of hundreds of zoning decisions made Tuesday night. The 104-acre waterfront VA property in southeastern Baltimore County would be allowed to have no more than one home per acre under the new zoning, down from 5.5 homes per acre.

BCPS takes heat over closure policy
Baltimore County Public Schools continues to court controversy after the system's new heat closure policy has led students in non-air conditioned schools to miss multiple days within the first week of school. Parents and elected officials have voiced concerns over both the implementation of the policy and the fairness of forcing students - many in the Dundalk and Essex areas - to miss school while their peers in air conditioned schools continue to learn.

Ben Watson Injury: Updates on Ravens TE's Achilles and Recovery
The Baltimore Ravens announced that tight end Ben Watson suffered a torn Achilles tendon on the first play of Saturday night's preseason game against the Detroit Lions and won't return this year. An exact timeline for his recovery has yet to be released.
Continue for updates.
Watson Out for Season
Sunday, Aug. 28
ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley reported that the Ravens are expected to place Watson on injured reserve by Tuesday, as they must trim the roster to 75 players by then.
Ravens Lose Valuable Veteran Presence
The veteran is in his first year with the Ravens. He's coming off the best season of his career, hauling in 74 passes for 825 yards and six touchdowns with the New Orleans Saints.
Baltimore plucked him off the free-agent market on a two-year, $7 million deal. He wasn't expected to be nearly as active in the passing game but remained a solid all-around player, given his blocking ability and solid hands.
"He's a run-blocker. He's very productive in the passing game. He can run all the routes. He makes plays in both areas. He makes third-down conversions," head coach John Harbaugh said at the time of the signing, per Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun. "Every type of offense that he's played in, he's been productive as a pass-catcher and as a blocker. He's a complete player."
Watson's emergence had pushed Crockett Gillmore and former second-round pick Maxx Williams, whom many expected to take over this season, to part-time roles. However, both should get their chance at impressing the team with Watson out of the lineup and Dennis Pitta nursing a broken finger.

Terrell Suggs Injury: Updates on Ravens Star's Achilles and Return
Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs continues to recover from an Achilles tear he suffered during Week 1 of the 2015 season. It is uncertain when he will be ready to return to game action.
Continue for updates.
Suggs Out vs. Colts
Saturday, Aug. 20
Ryan Mink of the Ravens' official website reported Suggs will not play against the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday.
Suggs Comments on Return to Practice
Monday, Aug. 15
"Darth Sizzle is back," Suggs said in a statement, via Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com. "It felt great to be back on the field with the team, there is nothing like it. Didn't get to do too much today as I am working my way back. I will speak with the media when I am fully back practicing."
Harbaugh Comments on Suggs' Recovery, Potential Return
Friday, Aug. 12
Suggs is part of a group of Ravens stars (Steve Smith and Elvis Dumervil being the others) coach John Harbaugh expects to be ready for Week 1, per David Ginsburg of the Associated Press:
They're all working really hard to play in the preseason, but we're certainly expecting them all back for the opener. We'll just have to make some decisions. Terrell Suggs is the closest. He had the injury the soonest. He's already on me about practice, and I'm holding him back right now. He'll be out there soon practicing. How much we play him remains to be seen. The other guys are probably a little longer away than he is — him being ready — but we'll just see where we go.
Ravens Need Suggs Healthy for Playoff Push
Suggs joined the Ravens as the 10th overall pick in the 2003 draft and never left. He's remained a stalwart member of the Baltimore defense for more than a decade, racking up over 100 sacks, earning six Pro Bowl selections and helping the team claim the Super Bowl XLVII title in 2013.
Although he's been mostly durable throughout his career, he suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon tear in the opener last year. His only other extended absence came during the 2012 campaign for the same reason, a torn Achilles, which forced him to miss the first half of the season.
Should he not be able to return in time for the regular-season opener, Za'Darius Smith figures to get the first crack at filling the outside linebacker void opposite Dumervil. Matt Judon and Victor Ochi could also see some extra playing time.
Suggs can still be an impact player for the Ravens at age 33. Baltimore will hope he can put his recent injury issues behind him one he's back to full strength.

Baltimore County property tax bills were issued in July, and some senior citizens had hoped to take advantage this year of a state-approved tax break intended to help long-time residents 65 and older and retired veterans. However, before that can happen, the Baltimore County Council has to pass a bill that sets a tax rate specifically for the county, and there is currently no timetable for doing that.

Baltimore County Board of Education passes heat closure policy
Baltimore County's superintendent of schools now has a clear directive for when to close non-air conditioned schools - it's when the heat index reaches 90 degrees. The Baltimore County Public Schools Board of Education passed a policy Tuesday directing the superintendent to close non-airconditioned schools if the heat index is forecast to reach 90 degrees by 11 a.m. When possible, the closure should be announced by 8 p.m. the preceding night.

Stambaugh stocks oranges at Weis
Driving down Holabird Ave, Brenda Liptrap said she had an "eerie feeling" when she saw that the Weis Markets sign had replaced the Mars Supermarket sign that had been in place for years. Weis Markets opened on Thursday, Aug. 4, in two Dundalk locations, on Holabird and Wise avenues, filling the space recently vacated by Mars Supermarkets, a family owned grocery store chain that closed down in July.

BGE rates could skyrocket again with latest mandate
A few weeks ago in The Dundalk Eagle , I wrote how the PJM Interconnection stated that rate payers in Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey should split the bill for a nuclear power plant in New Jersey. This decision by the PJM was made in April, and the FERC ruled in late June in PJM's favor.

The case for optimism
Growing up in the shadow of the steel mill that birthed her, the Dundalk of yesteryear boasted an airfield, military installations, thriving businesses, world-class industry and jobs that could support a solid middle-class existence. With hard work, many families not only survived but thrived - house, cars, picket fence - in other words, the American dream.

Dennis Pitta Injury: Updates on Ravens TE's Finger
Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta suffered a sprained finger during a minor altercation with teammate Kamalei Correa on Monday, per Jake Lourim of the Baltimore Sun.
Continue for updates.
Harbaugh Downplays Scuffle
Monday, Aug. 1
Ravens head coach John Harbaugh didn't think the confrontation between Pitta and Correa was a major concern.
"Pitta sprains his finger in some kind of little scuffle, and I will say 'little scuffle' with an exclamation point," Harbaugh told reporters. "He will laugh about that tomorrow when he reads this. I do like the competitiveness. I like the fact that Pitta is out here making plays and he's blocking people and he's getting after it."
ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley reported that the Ravens had three fights during Monday night's practice.
According to the Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec, Pitta said he and Correa have already worked things out.
Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco couldn't help but get a dig in on Pitta, joking that "at least he didn't break his hip," per Lourim. The 31-year-old Pitta missed the 2015 season while recuperating from hip surgery.
A healthy and productive Pitta would be a nice luxury for Baltimore. Crockett Gillmore caught 33 passes for 412 yards and four touchdowns last year, while Maxx Williams should have a bigger role in his second season. Add Pitta to the mix, and the Ravens would have a deep group of talented tight ends.

Maryland's strong crab harvest not translating to lower prices
Maryland watermen are reporting a robust blue crab harvest on the Chesapeake bay this summer - though it's not necessarily translating into lower prices for diners at restaurants and crab shacks. Male crabs are generally selling for between $30 and $95 a dozen, depending on size, at Baltimore-area crab houses and seafood carryouts.
