Smith Injury Details Revealed

Ravens coach John Harbaugh announced Smith has a sprained ankle and did not mention how long he'll be out of action.

Smith Has Emerged as Essential Piece to Ravens D

Smith has developed into a valuable member of the Ravens defense, starting every game he has played in during the last four seasons. The 2011 first-round pick continued to get better, posting his best year in 2015 with 54 tackles and three interceptions.

The 6'2", 210-pound cornerback continued to make plays against the pass in 2016 even when his numbers didn't match his impact.

The problem is the better Smith has played, the more he has been missed when out of the lineup. He was unavailable earlier this year with a back injury, leading to a major hole in the Ravens' passing defense.

"It presents a tough challenge as a defense when you don't have your best corner out there," safety Eric Weddle said after a loss to the Dallas Cowboys, per Garrett Downing of the team's official site.

Baltimore might have to learn how to survive without Smith once again after his latest injury. Shareece Wright will see an increase in responsibility, while Tavon Young and Jerraud Powers will also have to step up in the starter's absence.
